Week 8 – Connector.

-The las few chapters I felt like they were rushing the book too much. But Jonas got to experience a lot of new things for him like weather and animals, and I think that is what make Jonas similar to us.

-He got to experience rain. I’ve always remembered what rain feels like, they were great at the beginning and as the rain fade away, you start getting annoyed over your wet clothes and how cold it is. Jonas and th baby has to go through that situation and I feel sad for them.

-Another kind of pain he got to experience is the pain of a twisted ankle. Nobody likes to have a twisted ankle and would have to also walk miles everyday. Jonas was tempted to give up, but he didn’t, he choose to keep moving forward. And I understand his pain, the pain of the ankle hurting over and over again every time you walk. The pain of your leg wanting to give up but your heart fighting to keep moving.

Summarizer – Week 8

Our discussion director had asked us a few questions throughout
chapters 22 to 23. There were 5 questions.

1. In your opinion, how did the people recovered when Rosemary left and the memories came back to the people?
2. How did you feel when you realize that Rosemary is the Giver’s daughter?
3. What is more likely to happen if the Giver and Jonas’ plan is a failure?
4. How do you think about Jonas when he saved Gabriel when the bike fell and Jonas got injured?
5. In your opinion, how would Jonas’ parents feel when they realize Jonas is gone and he took Gabriel with him?

Our group had various answers and opinions. However, we had a lot of
similar opinions and thoughts.

Our reflector was able to recap a lot of the big ideas throughout the story. He was also able to state the mood of story – gloomy because Jonas is struggling to survive. He also saw that Jonas has changed a lot throughout the story, changing and maturing bits by bits as he received the memories and the knowledge along with it. We can all agree that he had became a true critical thinker and worked to change the Community that he was living in. By exiting the Community, Jonas shows the people what true feelings and memories are.

Week 8 – Reflector

The mood of the story is dark and gloomy because Jonas is struggling to survive. It is also action packed because Jonas is constantly on the run from the searcher planes sent by the Community. It is also focused on the hatred that Jonas developed for the community because he has been lied to his whole life. I was wondering where the destination of Jonas was. I also wondered what it looked like, if it is small or big. The largest thing I was contemplating about was how was the community handling the memories of Jonas. It also occurred to me that Elsewhere is mysterious so I want to know what it truly looked like. I think Jonas has changed a lot after finding that his father executes people without even knowing it. He became a true critical thinker and worked to change the Community that he was living in. He wants to exit the Community to show the people what true feelings and memories of the past are. The big idea is that Jonas is trying to release the memories back by escaping the Community. We follow his adventure escaping while trying to avoid the obstacles like hunger and planes. A big idea is he is actually seeing outside the community for the first time. In conclusion, I think that Jonas found a new place to live an call a home. At the end it said he heard music so that means the new place has culture and real feelings.

Week 8 – Discussion Director

Now to Reflector, the reflector thinks that over time Jonas will get more memories and he would be closer to Fiona. At some point, he will change the whole community, too. Over time, the story will be more intense and more dramatic because he’s going to experience things that nobody in the community have ever done.  At this moment, the reflector remembered when he first move to a new school and his old friends started to change and that happened exactly like Jonas and Asher when they argue while they’re playing the game of war. Throughout the story, Jonas began to have a different behavior and now he’s becoming more independent. Based on the reflector’s idea, if Jonas doesn’t change the community, he wouldn’t able to handle the pain example like the Receiver (Rosemary). Between chapters 17-19, the reflector got confused where Rosemary had all the good memories and Jonas have to suffer both good and bad. It also makes the reflector feels like best friends forever doesn’t exist in this community because of Asher arguing with Jonas.

1. Do you think that there is a different reason as to why there was an unscheduled holiday? Why?

My groups thinks that it’s just a day where the government set up for citizen to rest on be ready on it.

2. Do you think that the other children will start to pull away and treat Jonas differently after what happened in their game? If so, why?

I think that they don’t because Jonas is the Receiver so he should earn respect.

3. Do you think Lily like the idea of becoming a Storyteller?

She haven’t really thinking to be in it and also doesn’t like that role, too.

4. Do you think Jonas is a bit uneasy and frightened after he heard what happened to the previous receiver-in-training? If so, why?

Nope cause he learn from experience that he have to handle the memories.

5. Do you think Jonas would apply for a release if there wasn’t a rule saying that he couldn’t?

He wouldn’t asked to release, he enjoy job to be a Receiver and he is smart enough to think of what he do.

Week 7 – Reflector

I think that as the story goes, Jonas will get more memories, and Jonas will be closer with Fiona. Jonas will be trying to change the Community at some point in the story.

I think right now, the story is becoming more intense and dramatic because more things is happening to Jonas and he’s going through a lot of things that no one else in the community (except the Giver) have ever experienced.

By this point, I remembered when I moved to this school and the friends at my old school started to treat me differently, like how Jonas and Asher was arguing when they were playing the game of war.

Jonas, the protagonist, has changed throughout the story, like he was just going with what was set up at the beginning and now he’s becoming more independent.

In my opinion, one of the big ideas is that there were another Receiver (Rosemary), and Rosemary couldn’t handle the pain so she has to request a release. I think this might happen to Jonas if he doesn’t change the community.

In this section, the book makes me feel really confused at one part where Rosemary had all the good memories and Jonas have to suffer both good and bad. It also make me feel like best friends forever doesn’t exist in this community because of Asher arguing with Jonas.

I think Jonas’ friendship with Asher will fade away because they were arguing for something that shouldn’t be a huge problem.
