Summarizer // Week 8

Our Discussion Director didn’t do the questions, so no member answered. Our Reflector was great. I love her short reflection. It was intense to read, it catches the readers’ attention. Kim was our Visualizer this week, and I totally loved how she drew Jonas’s legs, the other members like it too. The part that Kim drew was a really important plot in the story. The 10 words that our wizard of the week has choose were: shuddering, solemnly, emphatically, inconsiderate, confronted, dwelling, sympathetically, transgression, gullies, exquisite. Most of the connection the connector made was to the Hunger Game.

Reflector Week 8 Ch. 20-23

It was such a huge risk for Jonas to bring Gabriel along as he left his community. The final chapters of The Giver were quite a rush weren’t they? There were many twists and turns of events that threw us all off. Jonas had changed quite a lot, he certainly became more mature. His vision of the world changed drastically, he had not been living in a Utopia, but in a failed attempt for a Utopia. Nothing was the same anymore, he had to leave this horrible place but to where? What do you think happened to Jonas and Gabriel at the end? We might never know, but they may have a slight chance of death in mere future.

WEEK 8 CONNECTOR

1. I can make a connection to my own life was when I moved here, everything has changed by then. I found myself isolated to everyone, and I was addicted to video games. I was too hasty, like Jonas was. And since I was so into video games, my scores suffered. I realized video games are not necessary , in fact video games were not that crucial to me. Then I decided to quit playing video games, and now I  find myself after all these days wandering around doing nothing. Since I know Jonas was not giving up on his journey, I am sure that anything is possible … and I know that we can do anything that we desire for… if we tried our best, and just being ourselves.

2. The Giver reminds me of Panem in the Hunger Games, though the Hunger Games takes place in a dystopia, I found a lot of similarities in both books.

3. I have read about the Hunger Games, which the protagonist is Katniss Everdeen. I found similar character traits of her compared to Jonas in The Giver. Example is that both characters share pale eyes, and both have a little sister.

4. I don’t read books much, so I can’t think of one that has a similar writing style to Lois Lowry.

5. This chapter relates to those that came before it is that it shows how  a certain event: becoming a Receiver could change somebody’ live, and their thoughts, too. In this case, somebody is Jonas, the protagonist of the story.

Summarizer Week 7

The Discussion Director posted 5 questions: Who is Rosemary?, If you were Asher in the Game of War, would you react to it or why? What happens if there were newborn twins? In your opinion, do you think the community is harsh sometimes? Do you think that Jonas will look his father the same way again?.
3 people in my group answered, Kim, Jeff, and me.

Kim made connections that she remembered about Parent Teacher Conference that she get to absent for a day and that reminds her of the holiday that everyone have a day off. She also made a connection that the hide and seek game in the book, reminds her of the Game of War.

Jeff replied to Kim that he liked the connections, and  Nghi said that reminds her of the hide and seek game that she used to play.

The Visualizer did not do the job this week.

WEEK 7 CONNECTOR | Group 5

  1. In chapter 17, the Community has the holiday when everyone get a day off, and Jonas goes out and have fun with his friends. It reminds me one of the Friday of August, I got a day off because my school held the Parent-Teacher Conferences on that day. My friends and I hung out for a whole day. We went to cinema, gossip, do homework together, we had a lot of fun that day.
  2. When Jonas and his friends were playing “war game”, it reminds me once my neighbourhoods and me played the Hide and Seek game, it was really fun and excited.
  3. I found some similarities between Jonas and Katniss in the Hunger Game. Both of them are brave, even Jonas wasn’t previously. They both try to face with challenges and don’t afraid to face with difficult things.
  4. In my opinion, I think Jerry Spinelli has the similar writing style to Lois Lowry because they are both write about kid’s adventures with interesting ironies.
  5. The relation between these three chapters and previous chapters is Jonas kept gaining new memories, some were painful and some were beautiful.
