Week 8: Summarizer
The discussion director had asked:
1. What do Jonas plan to do?
2. What happen to Gabriel? Why was Jonas so worried?
3. What was the rule that Jonas has broke?
4. What was the landscape like in chapter 22?
5. Predict what will happen in chapter 23.
Everyone didn’t answer the DD’s questions beside me and Khang. The connector didn’t do it yet so I really can’t make any connections. The visualizer also didn’t do it so I also couldn’t tell what they created and reply. Reflector also didn’t do his/her (IDK) job.

Week 7 – Summarizer
The Discussion Director (Alex) ask his 5 questions which are:
1. If Jonas’s mother were on the Committee, what job would she give to Lily when she reached twelve?
2. What difficult memory do The Giver gave to Rosemary that was similar to Jonas’s?
3. What problems does Rosemary might have that lead her to asking The Elders to be released?
4. How does Jonas’s memory relate to the scene of the Ceremony of Release of the twin?
5. Why do the Community have the Ceremony of Release in their society.
Me and Long Vu answered these questions in a very similar way.
The reflector(s), I can’t quite make out who is the Reflector because both Long Vu and Natalie pur theirs as Reflector for week 7. BUT, after I checked, it was Long Vu that is the Reflector. (<uh hum> Natalie change yours quick!). But still they’re both done with their works just that Natalie put up her wrong role on the title.
Duc and Khang did not do their jobs. Alex did his job but did not comment on others post, same for Natalie. >:(
Reflector-Week 7
My prediction for the rest of the story is that Jonas will be traumatized by what he have seen and he will try to find a way to fix the problem. The chapter started out as a fun day and everyone was happy, but when Jonas saw what the kids are playing, the story became dark and sad, causing the person to read this feel the pain of knowing everything. As Jonas learned who’s Rosemary is, the story got more sad and depressed. When Jonas saw the release, the story got excited in a bad way, got very depressed. As I read the story, it made me think of a relationship with tons of dark secret. I think that Jonas will change because as he know more about the dark side of the society, he will change the way he thinks about the world he’s living and wonder what the real world is like. I think the big idea is that in every perfect world, there will be a dark side that is hidden from the public. This made me think that a perfect world will never be perfect.
Week 7 – Reflector
1. Jonas wanted to know what happened to the last Receiver of Memory. But the information is forbidden to be reveal. In his community, no one ever spoke about her, not even her name. Fortunately, the Giver told him what happened to the last Receiver. Her name was Rosemary, she was about Jonas’ age when she was chosen. The Giver didn’t give her a lot of memories about pain, and suffer. Instead, he gave her memories of happiness. But sometimes, he did gave her memories of pain. His last section with Rosemary was the last time he sees her. After that day, she requested to be release. In the Community, people go but memories stayed. After Rosemary’s release, the Community was full of pains she left behind.
I feel bad for this little girl, she is too young to handle such great pains.
I think the job “Receiver of Memory” is really cruel. Because one person have to handle pains and suffers from the whole community.
Also, I think this shows the dark side of this ‘perfect’ society.
2. Jonas was curious about ‘releasing’ because he actually never witness one. So The Giver let him watch a tape of the recent release by his father. His father injected some liquid thing into the kid. Moments later, he was dead. After Jonas watched the process of ‘release’. He was terrified and shocked that his dad was the person who was doing this for years. He was so scared to meet his father again, he decided to not come home. Which the Giver agreed to let him stay over night . After that, they have a plan about changing the release rules.
When I read this, I actually feel bad for the people have been released. And how could the Elders ordered them to do that?
I think Jonas might find a way to breaking this tradition. Or else his own trainer would be release after his training is finished
I think, over the course of Jonas’ training, he started to developed his idea more. At the beginning, he is a a guy who goes with the flow, like others citizens. Then he started to have his own ideas by his own pinions. Which some were against the rules.
I think he wouldn’t ask his dad about the release when he goes back home. Because his dad would not be happy knowing his son knows about his job.
