definition: causing strong feelings

 

Perspiring

I was perspiring, because it was so warm. ( page 35)

Definition: to produce a clear liquid from your skin when you are hot or nervous

 

Emblem

The bicycle, at Nine, would be the powerful emblem of moving gradually out into the community, away from the protective family unit. ( page 41 )

Guess: opportunites

Definition :

– an object or picture used to suggest a thing that cannot be shown

– a person or thing that represents an idea

 

Exuberant

The audience applause, which was enthusiastic at each Naming, rose in an exuberant swell when one parental pair, glowing with pride, took a male newchild and heard him named Caleb. ( page 44)

guess: happiness, nervous & excitement

Definition: very lively, happy, or energetic : filled with energy and enthusiasm.

 

Podium

He knew that his parents cringed a little, as he did, when Fritz, who lived in the dwelling next door to theirs, received his bike and almost immediately bumped into the podium with it. (page 45)

Definition: a raised platform for a speaker, performer, or the leader of an orchestra.

 

Undergarment

There was new clothing: different undergarments for the females, whose bodies were beginning to change; and longer trousers for the males, with a specially shaped pocket for the small calculator that they would use this year in school; ( page 47)

Guess: special kind of extra clothing that females had to wear to protect and prevent people from seeing some body part.

Definition: a piece of underwear

Definition: very careful about doing something in an extremely accurate and exact way.

 

Acquisition

At the meeting where Asher was discussed, we retold many of the stories that we all remembered from his days of language acquisition. (page 54)

Definition: to gain (a new skill, ability, etc.) usually by your own effort.

She had been sitting quietly, serenely, throughout the Ceremony.( page 56)

Definition: calm and peaceful
