Week 8 – Connector

Chapter 20

– When Jonas said he don’t want to go home it reminds of when i was at my grandma house and all of my cousin are there and we are having a lot of fun. But my mom told me to go home it make me felt sad and desperately to stay at my grandma house because i don’t want the fun to end. When Jonas and the Giver plan out so Jonas could escape to Elsewhere that remind me of when my dad told me and my sister to plan out for the summer. What is the goal for summer and what to do.

Chapter 21

– When Jonas sneak out from his dwelling out to took his father bike to carried Gabriel with him to the bridge. That remind me of when i can’t sleep or can’t do any of my homework and sneakily went open the door and went outside then sit their some bicycle driver went back and forth. Then i would wonder around near my place and drive the kids toy while listening to music. The reason why i sneak out was because my dad would usually not let me went outside at night.

– This part relate to the part that came before it because before he went through the bridge to went somewhere else, Jonas and the Giver plan out how to escape and went Elsewhere.

Chapter 22

–  In this chapter Jonas ankle twisted and his knee were scrape blooding coming out from his knee. This part remind me of when i was a 4 years old little girl who went with my cousin to the supermarket. While sitting i realise there’s blood soaking through my pants that i wear. Then i pull my pant up and realize that there is a huge cut into my knee. Then my cousin rush me back into my house and told my dad about it. He then drove me to a hospital and the doctor then sew up my cut.

– This story reminds me of when my cousin walk then accidently bump her head into something. And her head bleed alot.

– This part relate to the part that came before it was because before he went deep into the forest he sneak through the community to come to this place.

 

Week 6 – Reflector

Base on the story through chapter 14-17, I predict that the story will stay mostly the same. Jonas would still continue going into the Annex room for training to become a Receiver. He would also still continue sleeping with Gabriel when the night came and follow the rule for the training. Like not said anything about his pain or activities for the training.

For the changes that I predict, maybe he would start to hang out and talk to Fiona more because he stop drinking the pills for stirrings, on page 130. There might be some special relationship with Fiona and Jonas in the future.

Other changes that might happen was Jonas would went out of the community to Elsewhere because he was curious. Also because Gabriel get release for some reason, on page 106 & 113. Or maybe because he get sick of being in The Community where no feelings are allow, no love and grandparent on page 124 & 127. Or maybe the opposite thing happen. For my own guess it would be Jonas family because he help the new child to sleep soundly. Also Jonas won’t be as close to Asher and Fiona as before because he make everyone stop playing the game of warfare by standing there on page 132-133.

While i was reading  make me think of when my mother is trying to get my baby brother to sleep in the past. Also of when my dad had to fight in the war. I also think of what it would feel like when there are no feeling and love allow. And there would be no family that contain our grandparent. The text for the chapters cause me to have different feelings that make the story way more interesting. It make me feel scare, sad, delight, very fascinating…Also because the author use variation of vocabulary to describe the events that happen in the story.

After The Reciever transmitted many memories to him, Jonas had change the way he thought about the community. He could now see color everywhere, transmitted his memory to other and many more things. Jonas understand more of how the world in the past actually works. He also gain wisdom day by day. And truly understand and experience the feelings so he knew that his Community don’t have feelings.

For my own opinion the big idea of the text is about how hard life was for Asher to knew all of the memory and can’t seem to share it to anymore. Also nobody seem to understand how he feel and in what situation except for The Old Giver. Jonas is burden of all the pain that the memory gave him.

Base on the clues in the text because Jonas had been influence by those memory and what The Old reciever had taught him. He had stop drinking pills to stop the Stirring because he knew that he couldn’t return to the world where there is no feelings that he had live so long. The memory of the warfare and how terrible it is made him want to stop the game of warfare that the kids and others of playing when they laugh and joke around. And more things.

Week 4- summarizer

From chapter 8-10 the discussion director ask this kind of question:

1) What is the assignment that Jonas get?

2) Why do you think Jonas got to have a rare jobs?

3) How were the ceremony goes for Jonas?

4) What connection can you make as you read through chapter 8-10?

5) How many receiver are/is there in the community?

Not everyone reply to all the questions. There is only Lily, Kelvin, and me ( Meg) answer it in the first place. But after a while Mickey answer but Mike and Jessica still don’t reply to the question. In the first place there is only Kelvin and Jessica P. did their work. Then after that Mickey and Lily done theirs but still Mike didn’t done his work yet. Kelvin connections mostly talk about the books that relate to “The Giver” or to the story from chapter 8-10. Kelvin also talk about the important job he had in the science fair last year are similar to when Jonas get his job the “Receiver of Memory”. Mickey Reflecting is good, and was well written. Lily had draw 2 brains, picture of sunburn, snow, going down hill and sunshine. I think she is very creative to think of the idea to draw the brain instead of drawing Jonas lying down The Reciever bed. This picture does not relate to the reading because it shows what Jonas and The Reciever was doing in the story in chapter 11 not from 8-10.

Week 3 – Word wizard

Stirring

Finally she sat down beside him at the table. “Jonas,” she said with a smile, “the feeling you described as the wanting? It was your first Stirrings. ( page 37)

Guess: wanting of pleasure for something

definition: causing strong feelings

 

Perspiring

I was perspiring, because it was so warm. ( page 35)

guess: nervous

Definition: to produce a clear liquid from your skin when you are hot or nervous

 

Emblem

The bicycle, at Nine, would be the powerful emblem of moving gradually out into the community, away from the protective family unit. ( page 41 )

Guess: opportunites

Definition :

– an object or picture used to suggest a thing that cannot be shown

– a person or thing that represents an idea

 

Exuberant

The audience applause, which was enthusiastic at each Naming, rose in an exuberant swell when one parental pair, glowing with pride, took a male newchild and heard him named Caleb. ( page 44)

guess: happiness, nervous & excitement

Definition: very lively, happy, or energetic : filled with energy and enthusiasm.

 

Podium

He knew that his parents cringed a little, as he did, when Fritz, who lived in the dwelling next door to theirs, received his bike and almost immediately bumped into the podium with it. (page 45)

guess: an object

Definition: a raised platform for a speaker, performer, or the leader of an orchestra.

 

Undergarment

There was new clothing: different undergarments for the females, whose bodies were beginning to change; and longer trousers for the males, with a specially shaped pocket for the small calculator that they would use this year in school; ( page 47)

Guess: special kind of extra clothing that females had to wear to protect and prevent people from seeing some body part.

Definition: a piece of underwear

 

Buoyancy

” Buoyancy,” Jonas corrected him. ( page 47)

Definition: the power of a liquid to make someone or something float.

 

Meticulously

Finally the Chief Elder paid tribute to the hard work of her committee, which had performed the observations so meticulously all year. ( page 52)

Definition: very careful about doing something in an extremely accurate and exact way.

 

Acquisition

At the meeting where Asher was discussed, we retold many of the stories that we all remembered from his days of language acquisition. (page 54)

Definition: to gain (a new skill, ability, etc.) usually by your own effort.

She had been sitting quietly, serenely, throughout the Ceremony.( page 56)

Week 2 – Chapter 2 – 4 Connector

Chapter 2 :

When Jonas’ parent had a private conversation to him it remind me of a time when I was in grade 5 and i get alot of detention. So I usually had to went down stairs and hangout with the principle. But there’s one time that i cried so the principle talk to me. I said all of my feeling and thought and he told me that when he was in Middle School he are like me sometimes too! He didn’t really like male teacher for some reason. And he told me that when i grew older i would i had to work with many other male teacher so just get used to it! The principle help sooth my feeling a that moment alot so I really appreciate him.

This chapter also remind me of Mrs. Neyda because she usually would had a private conversation to other like Jonas’ parent.

Chapter 3 :

When Jonas’ father pick up the new born baby name Gabriel it remind me of when my little brother were first born. When the nurse allow family member to come and had a look of the baby i came in and saw my brother who hasn’t open his eye yet laying on the hospital bed. When he came home pretty much every night my brother would cry so my mother would hold him with one hand and try to get him relax and fall asleep.

This chapter reminded me of a character name Rapunzel in the movie Tangle when she were small because she kind of have something special like Gabriel. Rapunzel parent don’t have yellow hair and Gabriel color eyes are rare.

Chapter 4 :

When Jonas are riding his bike around the community trying to find Asher and would join them taking care of the old people. It remind me of a time when i in grade 5 and would always ride my bicycle every afternoon around the city. Usually i would try to discovered new place near where i live. So there’s one time when i try to look around the place to find my friend house because i remember that the house is near to where i live. It took me awhile to find the house but i found it! I hangout in that house with an old woman who’s my dad best friend every single day and it was fun to told her about my day and pretty much everything.

This chapter remind me of a book name The Wimpy Kid. There’s one chapter that he would came in the old people care center and try to find his crush which is taking care of the old person.
