Week 7 Summarizer

This week the discussion director is Helen, once a again she did a fantastic job at coming up questions. This week questions is:
1/. How does Jonas feel since he can see different color? Why?

2/. By being able to see color, does it mean that he’ll begin to make choices of his own? Why?

3/. How can Jonas understand/know exactly what Lily is feeling when she said she felt angry?

4/. Do you notice any change in Jonas and Asher’s friendship?

5/. What do you think happened to the Receiver that was selected before Jonas that failed? Why was it a fail?

So all of our group members answer the questions and all of our answers has the same ideas proof that we all get the ideas of chapter 17-19. One of Jessica’s Vu connections is she connects the Giver with Veronica Roth (the one who wrote Divergent), how their’s writing are kinda alike each other. She’s also has a connection with her lifetime, when she’s sick and her mom bought her pills and she don’t want to take the pills just like Jonas. The visualizer of this week is Jenny, like always she did an amazing job at drawing and pointing out the important part of the chapters. Her interpretation of this week is about Jonas’s dad releasing a new born baby and how fast it is. Also Long Nam did a great job about finding out vocabulary that we mostly don’t know yet like ruefully, shreds, cradling, syringe,..

Aiden Week 7 Reflector

1. My prediction for this section is that Jonas will need more random pills to function himself throughout the story. And Gabriel will soon realize how important he is in the Jonas’s family. Jonas will also experience more memories throughout.

2. In chapter 17, the Giver reveals Rosemary and Jonas mark her eyes and said it was very luminous. Jonas is trying to comfort the baby Gabriel. Jonas is outraged.

3. I think of future because I’m just curious how Jonas and his family is going to do with Gabriel and Lily. And how is Jonas is going to move on as a Receiver.

4. Gabriel because he can talk and kind of appear in the story now and now can actually say something like his name “Gay!”

5. Jonas remembered Rosemary was released and Rosemary’s death when she drown. And he had a memory of Christmas morning. Jonas have a new baby in his family.

6.  The text makes me feel worry for Jonas’s family because they have a new baby which could result in a very bad situation for the family. Also the Ceremonies will be in the Hall of Records and they will watch it over. That makes me feel like the community is being watched by the Giver.

7. In conclusion i think the main points in the story is the family have a new baby and Jonas’s is having a very difficult time as a Receiver.

Aiden Week 5 Summarizer

So in this week, our discussion director have ask us a few questions to answer. So the first question Kiet ask us what happen in the memory of snow and we said he was on snow and has a red sled. The next question he ask us is why don’t they have snow, and sleds, and hills and we said because the weather changes, the hills will stop the traffic and makes it dangerous to drive in. The next question Kiet ask us is, is it true that they have no dreams and we said no, he just couldn’t share it. He also ask us about, what is the little test from the Giver, we answer the test was to test out their knowledge. The last question that Kiet ask us do Lily know the hippo was an elephant. And we answer nope. Our word wizard found some interesting and strange words that we didn’t even know and Gizzie did a nice job and showing us the definition. Khuong drew a picture of a sled sliding down the steep hill. Great job explaining and analyzing.

Week 6 – Reflector

Base on the story through chapter 14-17, I predict that the story will stay mostly the same. Jonas would still continue going into the Annex room for training to become a Receiver. He would also still continue sleeping with Gabriel when the night came and follow the rule for the training. Like not said anything about his pain or activities for the training.

For the changes that I predict, maybe he would start to hang out and talk to Fiona more because he stop drinking the pills for stirrings, on page 130. There might be some special relationship with Fiona and Jonas in the future.

Other changes that might happen was Jonas would went out of the community to Elsewhere because he was curious. Also because Gabriel get release for some reason, on page 106 & 113. Or maybe because he get sick of being in The Community where no feelings are allow, no love and grandparent on page 124 & 127. Or maybe the opposite thing happen. For my own guess it would be Jonas family because he help the new child to sleep soundly. Also Jonas won’t be as close to Asher and Fiona as before because he make everyone stop playing the game of warfare by standing there on page 132-133.

While i was reading  make me think of when my mother is trying to get my baby brother to sleep in the past. Also of when my dad had to fight in the war. I also think of what it would feel like when there are no feeling and love allow. And there would be no family that contain our grandparent. The text for the chapters cause me to have different feelings that make the story way more interesting. It make me feel scare, sad, delight, very fascinating…Also because the author use variation of vocabulary to describe the events that happen in the story.

After The Reciever transmitted many memories to him, Jonas had change the way he thought about the community. He could now see color everywhere, transmitted his memory to other and many more things. Jonas understand more of how the world in the past actually works. He also gain wisdom day by day. And truly understand and experience the feelings so he knew that his Community don’t have feelings.

For my own opinion the big idea of the text is about how hard life was for Asher to knew all of the memory and can’t seem to share it to anymore. Also nobody seem to understand how he feel and in what situation except for The Old Giver. Jonas is burden of all the pain that the memory gave him.

Base on the clues in the text because Jonas had been influence by those memory and what The Old reciever had taught him. He had stop drinking pills to stop the Stirring because he knew that he couldn’t return to the world where there is no feelings that he had live so long. The memory of the warfare and how terrible it is made him want to stop the game of warfare that the kids and others of playing when they laugh and joke around. And more things.

Summarizer Week 6

There are 6 people in the group had answered the group discussion director’s questions. Unfortunately, in my group, there is a person who didn’t do the visualizer job, so we don’t have that. My group had made a reality connection to The Giver, it’s about him scared about his point dropped down very low. So that’s is what our group had done for week 6. =))

Week 5 Summarizer

In week 5, our Discussion Director asked us these 5 questions:

1. Why do you think the ones who created the community banned all of the cold, hot, warm weather, and  all the mountains or hill?

2. The ones who created the community banned all of the color. what do you think about it? Bad or Good? Why?

4. why do you think the precious reciver failed? Why did she failed?

5. Do you think feel pain is a bad or good things? If you created the community would you banned the feeling pain or keep it and why ?

Everyone answered that the Community will banned all of the cold, hot, warm weather,…. because it will discontinued the Sameness

On the second one, it was a opinion based, Justin gave a really nice opinion about he values individuality and uniqueness and the Elders chose wrong

Our connector this week, he have connected the experienced of when Jonas saw the color red in Fiona’s hair, he climbed the mountain, and when he looked from the top, it was beautiful and he thought there was a city in his hands.

Also, our visualizer draw a picture of cute Jonas reading over his rules that he have to obey because he didn’t know what to do .

Our reflector also gave a really nice reflect on how he thinks the apple changes indicate that Jonas should change the society right away to make this society happy

Summarizer- Week 6

Kenny (DD) ask:

1.What did Jonas do to comfort Gabriel when he was crying at night?

2. What were the memorIES of pain that the Giver gave to Jonas?

3. Give an example of the wisdom that the Giver was talking about?

4. Why did the Community wanted an increase of population?

5. What did the Giver said to Jonas after giving him the memories of warfare and dead bodies?

– No one answer the questions exept me!

Khang (C) did a great job with his connection and I to have the same connection with the horrible dreams that no one can understand. Also, only me and Kenny comment on his post

Long Vu (V) he does post the fotobabble but i can’t seem to open and watch the video so we can’t comment on it. So, I assume that his work is not completed

Alex(R) and Natalie(WW) did not do there work and I need to wait up until 10:30pm but they sill didn’t do it yet.

Week 6 Connector

  • What did the discussion director ask in their initial post? Did everyone in your group (including you) reply and answer all of the questions? 1. Why do you think Jonas’s leg felt ached and his face felt raw in real life even though what he experienced was a dream?2. Why do Jonas suggest The Giver to * apply for a change of rules*?

    3. What kind of memory do you think The Giver gave to Jonas when he said: ” Please,” he gasped, “take some of the pain.”

    4. What do you think about what the Giver thinks when he gives Jonas the memory of “Family”?

    5. Why did Jonas lied?

  • Right now, only me and Khoa answered to the DD’s post.
  • What kinds of connections did your group members make?
  • Lisa made connections about Jonas receiving the memory of a family celebrating a party from the Giver and how her family also celebrate birthday parties and holidays. She also made another connection to the memory Jonas received about war and he saw the people were dying while cannons are dropping down. This reminded her of how there are certain places in the world that is not that peaceful and war is still going on.
  • What did the visualizer create? How does it relate to the reading? How did you group members react to the illustration?
  • The visualizer hasn’t posted the video so I don’t have it.
